More Than a Surf Stay: Life at Our Family-Run Mentawai Balcony

When you think of a surf trip to Mentawai, your mind probably goes straight to perfect waves. The Mentawai Islands are famous for world-class surf, but the experience is shaped not only by the waves, but also by where you stay. At Mentawai Balcony, we offer something different from large surf camps and resorts. We are a small, family-run accommodation that welcomes only two groups at a time, with space for up to nine guests. Staying with us means you become part of our daily rhythm, sharing meals, stories, and surf with our family.

Most resorts in Mentawai operate on a large scale. They host dozens of guests, run tight schedules, and feel more like a hotel than a home. At Mentawai Balcony, we keep things small on purpose. With just two beachfront bungalows, you have privacy and quiet that is hard to find elsewhere. You walk straight from your room onto the sand, surrounded by a big garden and sea views. Instead of blending into a crowd, you are welcomed personally by our family.

Our capacity is limited, which means your trip feels less like a package and more like a stay with friends. You do not wait in line for meals or share the surf with a busload of others. You spend your time how you want, guided by people who live here and know the island inside out.

A day with us starts early. The sound of waves rolling in is your first alarm clock. While you stretch or check the surf, my wife is in the kitchen preparing breakfast. She cooks three meals a day for our guests, using fresh local ingredients. Many of our guests say the meals are one of the highlights of their stay.

After breakfast, the day shifts to the surf. My son, who grew up here, takes you to the best breaks nearby. Within a short boat ride you reach famous waves like Beng Beng, Nipussi, Ebay, and Pitstop. Whether you are chasing hollow barrels or softer rides, there is a wave for every level. Having a local surf guide means you do not waste time guessing. You go straight to where conditions are best that day.

Back at the bungalows, my father is often in the garden or checking the boat. He takes care of the small details that keep everything running smoothly. Guests notice how much care goes into maintaining the place, and that is because it is our home too.

During the afternoons, you can surf again, rest in a hammock, or explore the village nearby. Some guests join us in the kitchen to learn about Mentawai cooking. Others sit on the balcony with a book and enjoy the sea breeze. Evenings bring everyone together for dinner. Stories flow easily when the group is small, and many guests leave with new friends.

We see many kinds of surfers come through our doors, but groups and families often find our setup perfect. With only two bungalows, your group can take over the whole property. Parents appreciate that the beach is right outside, and kids love the open garden space. Surfers enjoy the easy access to waves, while non-surfers find peace in the quiet setting. It is a balance that bigger camps cannot always offer.

Because we welcome only a few groups each month, our calendar fills quickly. Many guests return year after year, which means open slots are limited. If you are thinking about a surf trip to Mentawai in 2025 or 2026, this is the right time to plan. Booking early gives you the best choice of dates and ensures you can join us for the season you want.

Mentawai Balcony is more than just accommodation. It is our family home, and when you stay with us, you live the Mentawai way for a while. You wake up to waves, eat food cooked with care, surf world-class breaks, and share daily life with a family that loves this island. That is what makes us different.

We are open now for 2025 and 2026 bookings. If you want a surf trip that feels personal, quiet, and connected, we would love to welcome you to our home.
